Who is this training for?
The session is suitable for practitioners working with school-age pupils on the autism spectrum in both mainstream and specialist services. This includes:
- teachers
- senior management
- teaching assistants
- any other practitioner
What will you learn?
- To develop your knowledge and understanding of good autism practice.
- To reflect on and improve your practice through guidelines and activities.
- How to use the schools autism competency framework to evaluate and develop how you work.
AET Autism and Anxiety
This module with provide delegates with an understanding of what we mean by anxiety, how it appears in autistic pupils, what the key triggers are and what delegates can do to support autistic pupils and prevent and reduce anxiety.
AET Early Years Making Sense of Autism
Who is this course for? All early years staff, including support staff, admin staff, caretakers and lunchtime supervisors.
What does this course cover?
• What is autism?
• How does it impact on CYP?
• Some basic strategies will be covered.
Course Aims
A 2 hour whistle stop tour of autism, as a starting point for settings to be able to consider whole school approaches to supporting CYP. Participants will gain basic understanding of autism, and some strategies to help CYP.
AET Post 16 Making Sense of Autism
Who is this training for?
For everyone involved in the Post-16 sector who would benefit from having an understanding of autism. This includes teaching and support staff, office staff, caterers, transport staff, governors, employers and careers advisers.
What will you learn?
- Enhance your understanding and awareness of autism and how autism can affect learners in Post-16 settings
- Know the importance of understanding the learner and their profile of strengths and needs
- Identify potential barriers to learning for autistic learners
- Begin to make reasonable adjustments in the way you support autistic learners
- Reflect on the information you need to collect for creating a one-page profile

This is a raising awareness module for anyone working in schools. This includes teaching and support staff, office and ancillary staff, caterers, caretakers, transport staff and governors.

An Introduction to Precision Teaching
This is a 90 minute session which is designed to be delivered on school INSET days or as a twilight session.
• The rationale for using precision teaching
• The ‘six step’ process and how each stage works in practice
• Essential principles and common problems when using this approach
Course aims – to develop an understanding of using precision teaching methods as a way of planning and monitoring the effectiveness of targeted reading, spelling and numeracy interventions.
KS1 & 2 - Strategies to Improve Memory Skills for pupils with SEND
- For participants to gain knowledge and understanding of how poor memory skills can impact on learning.
- For participants to be able to implement strategies and advice from the course to more effectively support the children with poor memory skills that they work with.
C&I Top Tips for Reception Children with Social Communication Difficulties or Autism
This session is designed to support children in their reception year at school. This first session is a 'Top Tips' session giving ideas and strategies for support.
The session on 4th October will be a problem solving forum which will be an opportunity to ask questions and engage in problem solving with members of the team and each other.

KS3 - Strategies to Improve Memory Skills for pupils with SEND
For participants to gain knowledge and understanding of how poor memory skills can impact on learning.
For participants to be able to implement strategies and advice from the course to more effectively support the children with poor memory skills that they work with.
Social Narratives and Comic Strip Stories
What does this course cover?
• When and how to use Social Narratives and Comic Strip Stories
• How Social Narratives and Comic Strip Stories use the strengths of children with autism and social communication difficulties to explore and change behaviours
• Social Narratives and also Comic Strip Stories are suitable for all young people, but have been developed for CYP on the autism spectrum.

This training aims to develop your understanding of;
- How and when to use a social narrative
- How to write a social narrative
Supporting autistic young people and those with social communication needs transitioning to primary school
The aim of this training is to offer an opportunity for the reception class team to learn more about supporting young children with significant social communication needs and those diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
These sessions are specifically for staff working with children starting in the reception class and will be delivered by Advisory Teachers from the Communication and Interaction Team.
